FLAVOURS OF MELBOURNE REVIEW – Sally Bailey

Ever been too tired, overworked or plain out bored to be bothered searching out the most secret and divine bars and eateries in the labyrinthine alleyways of our fair city of Melbourne? Are you sick of the same old places along Swantson St, Collins St and Little Bourke St? Have you ever visited Melbourne and had no idea where to start looking, having been disappointed by regular “ go to” haunts displayed in the faux leather “What To Do In Melbourne” folders that haunt hotel rooms? People your troubles are over!

Flavours of Melbourne is a book as ascetically pleasing as it is informative and truth be told, your mouth will water with anticipation thanks to the fabulous photography by Brad Hill and the deliciously informative text by Jonette George. The three hundred and ninety one page, coffee table styled book designed by Daniel Wilton is a compendium of everything you need to know about Melbourne’s best kept eating and drinking experiences in Melbourne’s laneways and it’s rooftops.

Aside from letting the “cat out of the bag” on the best Melbourne has to offer, Flavours of Melbourne charts the unique history of Melbourne including that of the traditional owners of the land, The Wurundjeri, Boon Warrung, Wathaurong, Taungerong and Jaara tribes that formed the Kulin Nation and lived in Central Victoria on land stretching from Melbourne to Port Phillip and Western Port Bays. The Melbourne historical timeline from 1797 when explorer George Bass first reported the potential for South East Coast of the state of Victoria, right through to 2011 when Melbourne was voted “ The Worlds Most Liveable City”.

The book also encompasses some very Melbournian cultural experiences including a chapter dedicated to the cities street art, most of which can be seen in the labyrinth of Melbourne alley-ways that are also home to some of Melbourne’s best cafes, bars and eateries. The design of this book never allows your mind to wander, which is testament to how well this book has been put together. No sooner have you wondered “ Where I can I see this, or find this?” The book reveals all with the details contained in logically displayed photos, labels and maps.

There are thirty-seven laneways showcased in Flavours of Melbourne with particular attention being placed on lesser-known venues that exist in the shadows of the towering city. For anyone wanting to have an inner city adventure every couple of weeks, this should be your your bible, likewise if you live in Melbourne and are entertaining guests from out of state. For those weekends when you are not on a mission of discovery “ Flavours of Melbourne” also comes complete with twenty recipes for entrees, mains and desserts from key establishments showcased in the book such as the well-known Grossi Florentino and lesser-known but spectacular Portello Rosso.

Not all venues in Melbourne remain on street level. “Flavours of Melbourne” also showcases the best of what’s going on when you look to the Melbourne sky. Melbourne summers are bright and the days are longer than other state capitals further north. This makes for some of the best rooftop experiences available and naturally most of the good ones are showcased in this fabulous book. The double page quote at the beginning of the book says it all “ Discover the spirit of Melbourne through food, wine and the unexpected sunrise or sunset, seen from a laneway or rooftop.”

If the contents of this book were offered as a website “deal” you would jump at it, however if you delve head long into this fantastic compendium you can be rest assured that it will give you hours and hours of entertainment that cannot not be purchased from a website. “Flavours of Melbourne “ is available at all good bookstores and is published by Smudge Publishing.
