Reinventing the traditions of circus, cabaret, variety and burlesque for the 21st century audience, and following a sell-out season on Broadway in New York which received rave reviews, Spiegelworld will bring its all-new show, EMPIRE to Australia. Produced by Spiegelworld and presented by Nine Live, tickets go on sale from Thursday 1 November.
The 700-seat antique Spiegeltent, furnished with beveled mirrors, plush velvet-upholstered seating booths. Spiegelworld, which also features a carnival-style style bar and the most intimate stage in town, will start its Australian tour over summer in Sydney on 4 January 2013 at The Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park. EMPIRE will then perform to Melbourne audiences from 14 March, followed byBrisbane from 24 May 2013.
EMPIRE is a 90-minute theatrobatic adventure performed by the greatest international talent ever assembled in one tent, with artists such as, Oscar & Fanny, Lime Green Lady, Carrot Man, Gorilla Girls, Big Mac Boy and many more.
Spiegelworld Impresario, Ross Mollison said: “EMPIRE is the very height of the Spiegeltent artform. We scoured the planet to find the most awe-inspiring acts and mixed them into a show that represents everything that is sexy, excessive, decadent and bizarre about New York City. It’s all presented on an intimate stage not much bigger than a postcard and I am delighted to be nowmailing it home for Australia to enjoy.”
Nine Live General Manager, Leon Spellson said: “We’re thrilled to bring EMPIRE to Australia and to partner with the world-famous Spiegelworld. I have no doubt Australian audiences will embrace this show as much as New Yorkers did. This is the one SHOW you must see”
For EMPIRE, Mollison has assembled the stellar Australian creative team of director Wayne Harrison (former Artistic Director of Sydney Theatre Company and Sydney’s New Year’s Eve), choreographer John ‘Cha Cha’ O’Connell (Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge), designer Angus Strathie (AcademyAward for Moulin Rouge) and lighting designer Martin Kinnane.
Spiegelworld first presented its annual summer season in New York City on Pier 17, South Street Seaport with acclaimed shows including Absinthe, La Vie, Gazillionaire’sLate Night Lounge and Desir. For the world premiere season of EMPIRE, this year Spiegelworld relocated to a premium vacant lot right in the heart of Broadway, the first time a tent show had ever been presented at Times Square. Spiegelworld is currently presenting Absinthe in the forecourt of Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, now in its 19th sold-out month.
